My heart raced as I read this article, http://nyti.ms/oM5JFz , and I couldn’t help but smile. As a mother, I despair at the conditions women in places like Sierra Leone must face throughout pregnancy and childbirth. Frankly, it’s a testament to human strength and resilience that healthy babies are born in these countries.
But how to maintain this kind of program when it is so heavily subsidized by donors? Should Western donors just accept their role as social service providers in places like Sierra Leone? Maybe we should. At least the benefits are obvious.
